Hosting choices

Self-host CRCON or choose a managed service: what remains your responsibility?

The choice is not just about a monthly price. What matters is who reliably operates the management software, investigates failures and owns changes. This comparison helps an HLL community clarify its requirements and the real workload before committing.

The essentials

Managed RCON hosting is not gameserver hosting. The Frontline offer still requires an existing gameserver. Community rules and moderation decisions remain your team’s responsibility.

The interface and its technical operation are separate layers. A managed tool does not take over your community’s moderation decisions. Interface example shown in German.

Separate the services before comparing them

The gameserver runs the game. RCON software uses its administration interface and adds a user interface, workflows and automation. The Frontline offer includes provisioning, updates and technical operation of the booked tool instance. Any additional services depend on the current offer.

Self-hosting simply means your team operates an RCON solution that is available and licensed for that purpose. It does not imply that an identical Frontline version is offered for self-hosting. Confirm the licence, source and functionality of the actual software before planning infrastructure.

What self-hosting involves

A successful installation is not the same as ongoing operation. Your team needs owners for updates, access protection, monitoring, backups and recovery. It also needs to diagnose connection failures and check whether game or software changes affect the integration.

Plan for absences as well. If only one person understands the installation, a fault during holidays or working hours can become a problem. Documented procedures, a tested recovery process and a deputy often matter more than how quickly the first installation can be completed.

What a managed service takes on—and what it does not

Management can reduce the technical workload of the tool instance. Your team works in the browser and has a contact for the agreed technical service scope. This may suit communities that want to spend most of their time on moderation, events and helping players.

Rules, roles and decisions affecting players still belong to the community. Explicitly confirm included backups, retention periods, restoration procedures and support hours before booking. This guide promises no particular response time, availability level or backup service that has not been confirmed in the offer.

Compare the total workload, not just the tariff

For self-hosting, include staff time, monitoring, backups and troubleshooting alongside infrastructure and any software costs. For a managed offer, consider the term, included services, extensions and any separate gameserver costs. One cheaper line item cannot decide the whole comparison.

For each option, list the tasks that remain internal and name their owners. Use your real requirements for server count, permissions and operating hours. Current pricing and contract terms belong on the FLN product page; this guide makes no fixed-price or savings claims.

Make a decision you can support

Self-hosting may fit if suitable software is available, technical expertise and cover exist, and you deliberately want ongoing responsibility. A managed service may fit if a clear technical contact and less internal operational work matter more to your community.

Check the actual server integration separately for HLL and HLL: Vietnam. Ask about required features, data exports, importing existing settings and what happens at the end of the term. Custom shop or VIP extensions are not automatically included in every installation. A useful decision starts with understanding those boundaries.

Frequently asked questions

Is managed hosting always cheaper?

No. It depends on infrastructure, the desired scope and your team’s workload. Compare ongoing tasks and real costs. Without that information, neither a universal saving nor a clear price advantage can be claimed.

Does the offer include an HLL gameserver?

No. The described Frontline offer covers the managed RCON tool instance. Your existing Hell Let Loose or HLL: Vietnam gameserver remains a separate service whose integration needs to be checked.

Can I self-host exactly this Frontline version?

This comparison does not promise a self-hosting licence or download for this version. If you plan to self-host, you need software explicitly available for that purpose and must check its licence and features separately.

Can I change hosting models later?

That depends on export options, data formats and the installations involved. Confirm which settings, player records or lists can be transferred. A fully automatic or lossless migration is not promised here.

Based on the published Frontline product description. Actual features depend on the game, interface and installation. Check the current offer for pricing and contractual services.
